Meaningful Mentorship

Superintendent Galaviz Dear Canutillo Community,

Today at Jose Damian Elementary I had the distinct honor of witnessing a heartwarming celebration—a testament to the transformative power of mentorship and the unwavering dedication of our students. The occasion was a special presentation recognizing one of our own, Austin Miramontes, a senior at Canutillo High School, as the "Big of the Year" in our collaborative program with Big Brothers Big Sisters of El Paso.

At the heart of our educational philosophy lies a commitment to providing students with enriching, real-world experiences that transcend traditional boundaries. Our Career & Technical Education (CTE) pathways, designed to cultivate skills and passions, serve as pathways to success beyond the classroom. The education preparation class at Canutillo High School exemplifies this ethos, with students dedicating time each week at Damian, immersing themselves in the art of teaching and mentorship.

Austin Miramontes embodies the spirit of service and leadership that defines our CTE programs. A beacon of compassion and dedication, Austin aspires to pursue a degree in social work—a testament to his profound commitment to helping others and making a positive impact on the world. Through the program at Damian, Austin has seized the opportunity to gain hands-on experience, honing his skills and nurturing his passion for serving others.

During the special presentation, as Austin stood before his peers, mentors, and community leaders, his humility and sincerity shone brightly. When asked about his experience in the program, Austin's words resonated deeply: "I didn't know what to expect, but I have come to really learn that this is an amazing opportunity to grow and make a difference." His sentiment encapsulates the essence of our educational mission—a journey of growth, discovery, and the relentless pursuit of excellence.

But Austin's impact extends far beyond accolades and recognition. His Little, Damian first grader Adam, echoed the sentiments of countless students who have been touched by Austin's guidance and support. "He is like a brother to me," Adam shared, a testament to the profound bonds forged through mentorship and camaraderie.

In honoring Austin Miramontes, we not only celebrate his individual achievements but also the collective efforts of our educators, mentors, and community partners who champion the transformative power of mentorship. The presence of representatives from Big Brothers Big Sisters of El Paso and the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP) underscored the collaborative spirit that defines our educational endeavors.

As we reflect on this momentous occasion, we are reminded of the profound impact of our CTE programs in shaping the trajectories of students' lives. Through immersive experiences, personalized learning, and mentorship opportunities, students like Austin are empowered to explore their passions, discover their potential, and chart a course towards a fulfilling future.

The Canutillo CTE programs are not just pathways to careers; they are pathways to purpose, fulfillment, and lifelong learning. They instill in our students the confidence, skills, and resilience needed to thrive in an ever-changing world. As superintendent, I am immensely proud of Austin Miramontes and all the students who exemplify the spirit of leadership, service, and excellence.

In closing, let us reaffirm our commitment to nurturing tomorrow's leaders, fostering a culture of mentorship, and empowering every student to realize their dreams. Together, we will continue to transform lives, uplift communities, and inspire generations to come. Congratulations, Austin, on this well-deserved recognition. Your journey is a testament to the transformative power of mentorship and the boundless potential of our students to shape a brighter future for us all.
