Northwest Early College High School is once again one of America’s Best High Schools, according to a national ranking of campuses done by U.S. News & World Report magazine.
This is the second year in a row that NWECHS has been awarded the Best High School designation by the magazine for its high rigor academics and college preparation efforts.
“Northwest serves a population of students that faces immense obstacles, and yet our kids continue to perform, thrive and lead,” said Principal Frank Clark. “This ranking by U.S. News is proof that the faculty and District leadership are committed to providing the type of high-quality instruction that transforms lives and makes a difference.”
The magazine gave Northwest a score of 96.12 percent, which places it among the the top five schools in the borderland, the top 100 schools in Texas and the top 700 schools in the United States. Northwest was lauded for having 99 percent of its students take at least one AP Exam and having 44 percent of students pass at least one exam. The school also has a 100 percent graduation rate.
Rankings are based on independent data of student performance gathered by U.S. News and their partners at RTI International, a global research firm. The designation of Best High School is one of the most coveted in the country because it is based on data gathered by third parties and not provided by either the campus or an affiliated school district.
“U.S. News is backing up something we already knew: that Northwest Early College is one of the Best High Schools in the United States,” said Canutillo ISD Superintendent Dr. Pedro Galaviz. “The teachers, staff and students at Northwest demonstrate that Canutillo is leading the way in providing educational opportunities that change lives.”
This is the second national designation Northwest has received in the last 12 months. The National Center for Urban School Transformation in May named NWECHS one of its 2023 America’s Best Schools based on high performance among all student populations despite challenges like low income families and other socio-economic determinations.
