Students throughout Canutillo ISD are starting the new school year armed with new technology to keep them connected to learning in and out of the classroom.
Third through seventh grade students throughout the District are receiving new Apple laptops this school year as an investment in connectivity through a $1 million dollar Federal Communications Commission E-Rate reimbursement to the District towards upgrading technology.
At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Canutillo ISD led the way to ensure every student in the District had access to their own device and connectivity to stay connected during remote learning. The District has since continued to value digital learning technology as a vital tool in and out of the classroom, to keep students connected to information and learning.
“The ability to provide our students with these new laptops demonstrates our commitment to continue to deliver a connected community,” said Executive Director of Information Technology Dr. Oscar Rico. “Access and equity to technology remains a focus and up-to-date devices still play a critical role in student learning.”
Canutillo ISD students are aware of the investment the District is making towards their education and have taken ownership of their devices by displaying responsibility and care. The District has seen a low rate of three percent of student laptops being lost or damaged when the standard rate is typically between five and seven percent.
It is through their commitment to care that their previous laptops will be getting a second life. As a result of a buy-back agreement made by the District, a store for the Canutillo community to purchase the previous devices at a discounted rate will be made available.
“Our community will be able to access the previous student laptops, warranted and refurbished,” Dr. Rico said. “These are top of the line machines at a fraction of the cost. This furthers our mission to be able to provide digital equity not only to our students but to our entire community.”
