The Northwest Early College High School Student Council members have once again shown they are worth their weight in gold. They have been recognized as a 2023 National Gold Council of Excellence by the National Student Council (NatStuCo) for their exemplary record of leadership, service and activities that improve the school and community.
A student council must meet a variety of criteria to earn the National Council of Excellence Award. In addition to basic requirements such as a written constitution, regular meetings and a democratic election process, the councils must have demonstrated successful sponsorship and participation in activities such as leadership development and service to the school and community.
“Our student council members are leaders on campus and in the community,” said NWECHS Student Council Advisor Miguel Martinez. “They set high standards for themselves and always conduct themselves positively to motivate others to participate in an array of activities and projects they make possible for our student body and community.”
At NWECHS there is never a dull moment for student council members. The group works tirelessly to serve the community by organizing events such as graffiti clean up and canned food drives. This year, they hosted appreciation events such as the Cancer Survivor Dinner and the Veteran’s Day Luncheon.
Additionally, members come together to bring special events and activities to students such as the winter social where middle school students from Canutillo and Alderete middle schools are invited to the NWECHS campus to learn about Griffin life while having fun and playing games.
The group brings holiday cheer by organizing the annual Northwest Lights show to unite the entire Canutillo community and students. They also come together to ensure students show their pride and spirit with the highly anticipated Spirit Week.
“I am proud to be part of a group of such hardworking dedicated individuals who are always willing to do whatever it takes to serve our community and make a difference for our fellow students on campus,” said student council president Paris Gastelum. “It is an honor to receive this recognition.”
