The group has been recognized as a 2023 National Gold Council of Excellence by the National Student Council (NatStuCo). The NatStuCo program is supported by its parent organization, the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).

“I’m so proud of my group of student leaders,” said CHS Student Council Advisor Carolina Lopez. “They work so hard and their passion for their community motivates all of us. To earn this award for the first time makes me so proud to have had the opportunity to serve alongside them.”

In addition to this National award, Canutillo student council has also earned the 2023 Texas Association of Student Councils (TASC) Sweepstakes Council designation for the seventh consecutive year. To achieve Sweepstakes Council designation, schools must first earn Outstanding Student Council honors and receive outstanding recognition in programs like Drugs, Alcohol, Safety and Health (DASH), Pride and Patriotism, and Energy and Environment. Schools also must submit to TASC a Community Service report to show in-depth involvement.

“It’s an honor and privilege and I’m so excited that our council is expanding our horizons,” said StuCo President Leslie Reyes. “Although I am graduating, I’m excited to hear about the next steps that our Eagle StuCo takes.”

A student council must meet a variety of criteria to earn the National Council of Excellence Award. In addition to basic requirements such as a written constitution, regular meetings and a democratic election process, the councils must have demonstrated successful sponsorship and participation in activities such as leadership development and service to the school and community.

“Exceptional student councils are a hallmark of exceptional schools,” said NASSP CEO Ronn Nozoe. “The Canutillo High School council has taken student leadership to the next level, creating a culture promoting scholarship and citizenship that resonates far beyond their team. I’m delighted to recognize their hard work with the National Gold Council of Excellence Award for their commitment to service, leadership and uplifting the voices of their peers.”
