The gymnasium at Jose J. Alderete Middle School was filled with anticipation, excitement and an abundance of trifolds booming with science flair as students throughout the District gathered to participate in the Canutillo ISD District Science Fair.
Elementary students in third through fifth grade were able to explore and discover an array of topics by conducting experiments and investigations on everything from dog slobber to video games.
Each Canutillo ISD elementary school held campus fairs to choose the top projects from each grade level to advance to the District level.
At the district level, each participant had the opportunity to present their project to judges from Canutillo High School and Northwest Early College High School and compete against others across the District. Judges aimed to gain insight into each project and gauge the participant’s inquiry skills, creativity, and ability to share their results in a clear concise manner.
“We are proud of all our participants. They did a great job of taking a topic that interests them, doing the research and making their topic interesting to others,” said Superintendent Dr. Pedro Galaviz. “The projects were insightful and creative and our students learned a lot not only about the scientific method but how to present what they learned to others.”
The District Grand Champions are third grader Sophia Villagran for her project “What is the Dirtiest Surface,” fourth grader Aiden Lopez for his project “How Clean is Clean” and fifth grader Javen Originales for his project “Do Video Games Ruin Your Brain?”
