This is the image for the news article titled Message From Board President Patsy Mendoza - Feb. 17Dear Canutillo Familia,

Trustees on Monday spent hours reviewing applications and interviewing candidates who sought to fill the two-year vacancy the resignation of former Board President Sergio Coronado created on the Board. The work was not an easy one. After all, we had six extremely qualified people who raised their hands and said they wished to be considered for this hard task. If you remember well, being a school trustee is almost a full time job that requires extensive time commitment and public scrutiny, all for the amazing salary of zero dollars a year.

Still, these six candidates met with us, answered our questions and seriously gave it their all in their effort to serve our community. I thank them all for their dedication to our children and our neighbors.

In the end, the Board decided to appoint Mr. Bobby Simental to fill the unexpired term on the Board. Bobby, as many of us in Canutillo know him, will serve on the Board through 2025. On behalf of the rest of the Board, I want to welcome him on board and wish him good luck. I know he will be an asset to our team.

Bobby is a licensed private investigator for the state of Texas and a Canutillo High School alum. His son is also a CHS graduate and his granddaughter is now a student at Garcia Elementary School. His whole family has deep roots in Canutillo and he will bring that passion for our community to the Board.

Now that we are a full Team of Eight (the seven trustees and Dr. Galaviz, our Superintendent), it is time to roll up our sleeves and get to work. We have a lot of challenges ahead of us and it is my sincere hope that we can come together as a body and work on behalf of the children of Canutillo.

We each bring a different perspective to this role and that means we don’t always see eye to eye on the governance of our District. But that doesn’t mean we each don’t believe that our District has great potential. Our difference of opinion will make us stronger and help us bring new layers of accountability toward one another. In the end, that should be beneficial for the entire District.

Bobby has been sworn in and his first meeting with the Board will be on Feb. 28. Stop by and wish him luck!

¡Un abrazo fuerte!

Patsy Mendoza
