January is a special month for us since it is Texas School Board Appreciation Month. On behalf of the entire Canutillo ISD Board of Trustees, I want to thank our campuses and administration for their continued support and signs of support. It has been wonderful to drive around the District and see the messages on marquees. Serving the community of Canutillo is an honor for all six of us on the Board, and we are thankful to be able to represent this wonderful family.

As you may know, however, there’s only six of us on the Board currently when there’s supposed to be seven. There is a vacancy on the Board and we continue to look for qualified candidates who want to step up and serve. The deadline to submit an application for consideration for appointment to the Board is this upcoming Friday, Jan. 20. If you wish to consider filling the unexpired term, fill out the form here: https://www.canutillo-isd.org/BoardofTrustees/Board_Vacancy.

Lastly, the Board of Trustees this week had a special meeting to discuss the very important issue of growth in the District. As you may well know, voters in the District voted down the Every Child, Every School Bond referendum last November by a wide margin. The District is now forced to regroup and find solutions to the very real challenges we face ahead in the area of facility needs. The will of the voters is to be respected, but as leaders in the District we want to plan our way out of this situation. Our kids deserve it.

To that end, it is imperative for us to know exactly what the community feels our priorities should be when it comes to using our limited resources in response to facility needs. Should we funnel our funds to safety and security projects, fix leaky roofs or build additional capacity at schools with overcrowding? We know we don’t have the funds to do it all, so we want input on what we need to address first as a priority.

The District, therefore, has launched a Canutillo Growth Survey 2023 to help us gather your thoughts and ideas on this topic. This fast survey will help us prioritize projects and determine what you as a parent, staff or even student feel is the most important thing to do. Please take two minutes of your day to let us know what you think.

You can find the survey on our website or by clicking this link: https://my.thoughtexchange.com/scroll/614680667/welcome.

Have a wonderful long weekend, Canutillo! Let us all take the day off on Monday to reflect on the sacrifices and legacy that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. left behind.

¡Un abrazo fuerte!
