This is the image for the news article titled We the StudentsThe Canutillo Independent School District will soon be the first public independent school district in the state of Texas to represent the student voice through a student advisory council. The Board of Trustees voted to move forward with the creation of this inaugural council to allow greater student input in district affairs and agendas.

“It is very important that we continually get input and feedback from our students. After all, they are the reason we are here serving,” said Armando Rodriguez, Canutillo ISD trustee. “The student advisory council will not only allow us to build capacity in the community but also give our students a better understanding of the structure of government and what roles and responsibilities are of board members to make them more civically minded and responsible citizens.”

The Canutillo ISD student advisory council is a board-led initiative that will provide Canutillo High School and Northwest Early College High School students with the unique opportunity to share feedback, experiences, and perspectives on various issues affecting the district. Students will not have the ability to vote but will be actively involved in the discussion of agenda items.

“We need to have the voice of our student population to bring us information and to dismantle misinformation,” said Patsy Mendoza, Canutillo ISD trustee. “It is a win-win for the district and the students.”

Now that the council has been given the green light to move forward, trustees and district officials will be working on finalizing the details and structure of how the student advisory council will operate.
