The Canutillo Independent School District Board of Trustees conducted the annual summative evaluation of Superintendent of Schools Dr. Pedro Galaviz, rating his performance as exceptional.

Trustees evaluated the Canutillo ISD Superintendent’s performance using a rigorous rubric that rates his effectiveness in eight domains: leadership; personnel management; administration and fiscal/facilities management; student management; professional growth and development; schools/community relations; board/superintendent relations; and supervisory responsibilities.

“We are very fortunate to have a leader as committed and dedicated as Dr. Galaviz. He not only represents and serves the Canutillo community well, he is a part of the community, his children attended Canutillo schools and he knows how unique and close-knit Canutillo is,” said Sergio Coronado, Board of Trustees President. “His outstanding leadership really shined through this past year in the way he rose up to keep our kids learning at the height of the pandemic with little interruption to education. We commend his vision and direction to continue building a competitive, equitable premiere District.”

Dr. Galaviz took the helm as Superintendent of Canutillo ISD in 2013 with the District receiving significant accolades under his direction such as earning consecutive “A” grades from the Texas Education Agency, the only Region 19 district to do so. He has continually championed competitive salaries for District staff and in recent consecutive years, Canutillo employees have seen pay increases. In 2019, teachers, nurses, and librarians received a five percent increase, while all other employees received a four percent raise. For the 2021-2022 school year, Canutillo ISD employees saw a two percent general pay increase. The District has continually been able to maintain a balanced budget while also accommodating salary increases.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Canutillo ISD quickly provided devices for every student and internet access to the homes of 70% of students in the District who lacked sufficient accessibility, not only enabling remote learning but providing the foundation for a truly digitized educational environment and greater community inclusivity. Dr. Galaviz created the distinct position of a Public Health Emergency Manager, the first and only of its kind, to provide students, staff and community with updated evidence-based information following the local, state and national health guidelines to ensure a safe learning experience for all our students when classes resumed in person this school year.

Dr. Galaviz ushered the District into a new era of transparency, collaboration and inclusivity to build trust with the community. He assembled the Just for Kids Committee of community members and other district stakeholders to work together and have a voice in plans to build the future of the district. Additionally, during his tenure, Canutillo ISD has been recognized for its efforts in financial responsibility, transparency and integrity receiving a perfect score of 100 - Superior Achievement - for the 2020-21 School Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas (FIRST) and being named one of three El Paso school districts, to achieve specific transparency goals through the Comptroller’s Transparency Stars program.

Dr. Galaviz’ positive rating will result in an extension of his current contract and a two percent salary increase.
