Two Canutillo High School students earned statewide kudos and a little cash for their efforts to showcase the work being done at their school to create inclusive environments for students with disabilities.
Students Aaliyah Uribe and Leslie Reyes earned third place in the statewide Special Olympics of Texas Unified Champion Schools film competition. Their 2-minute video featuring the collaboration students of all backgrounds have at CHS was among the best in the state.
“We are so proud of Aaliyah and Leslie for showing the rest of the state the magnificent level of cooperation and camaraderie that exists at Canutillo High School with our amazing special-education students,” said Interim Principal Candice Marrufo. “It’s truly inspiring to see our students embrace and learn from our special kids. It’s a win-win situation for everybody.”
The video features photos and scenes of students playing, learning and simply hanging out together to the tune of Queen’s “You’re My Best Friend.”
The Special Olympics’ Unified Champion Schools program affords schools an opportunity to promote meaningful social inclusion by bringing together students with and without intellectual disabilities to create accepting school environments using the Special Olympics Unified Sports program, inclusive youth leadership and whole school engagement.
