When the National Elks Organization put out a call to area elementary school kids to participate in their annual poster contest in honor of National Red Ribbon Week, the students at Deanna Davenport Elementary School were up for the challenge.
Shirley Clere, the contest chairperson from the El Paso Lodge 187, announced that they received nearly 40 entries from Davenport Elementary Students with three Falcons claiming the top spots.
“We are tremendously proud of our students for always welcoming opportunities to shine and show what great work they are capable of,” said Principal Guadalupe Montañez. “The Falcons dominated this competition while learning the meaning behind the contest’s theme - “Be Kind to Your Mind. Live Drug Free.”
The winners were:
- 1st Place – $100 gift card
Danna Fernandez – 4th Ms. Escobar
- 2nd Place – $50 gift card
William Mendez – 3rd Ms. Estrada
- 3rd Place – $30 gift card
Sebastian Ochoa – 4th Ms. Escobar
Three additional students took Honorable Mention, each winning $5. They are:
- Diego Nieves, 4th Ms. Escobar
- Zaqueo Zamarripa, 4th Ms. Barraza
- Aranza Lopez, 4th Ms. Barraza
The Elks National Drug Awareness Program is the largest volunteer drug awareness program in the United States that is committed to eliminating the use and abuse of illegal drugs by all members of society. It believes that in order to ensure a bright future for our country, it is essential that children be raised in a drug-free environment.
