The Canutillo Independent School District this week announced the hiring of veteran music instructor Andres Rodriguez as the new band director for Canutillo High School. Rodriguez will begin his tenure on July 8.

As the band director for Canutillo High, Rodriguez also will serve as the District Music Administrator overseeing music education in grades pre-k through 12.

“I am humbled by the opportunity to lead one of the premier band programs in the region, and excited about the potential that exists in the Canutillo community,” Rodriguez said. “I look forward to working with the students, teachers and parents in Canutillo to continue to build on the tradition of excellence that already exists in this school district.”

Rodriguez is a 20-year veteran of the classroom and last served as a music instructor in the Ysleta Independent School District. He has served as band director at Ysleta High School and assistant band director in the Riverside and Bel Air learning communities, as well as orchestra director at Eastwood Middle School.

His experience includes a stint in the percussion staff for the Memphis Drum and Bugle Corps in Tennessee as well as the Revolution Drum and Bugle Corps in San Antonio, TX.

As an instructor, Rodriguez has amassed an impressive track record that includes a combination of 21 UIL Marching/Concert Band Sweepstakes Awards, nine UIL Area Marching Band Awards, three UIL State Marching Band Awards, five Bands of America regional appearances and two Winter Guard International Percussion Awards.

Rodriguez has a bachelor’s degree in music instruction from the University of Texas at El Paso and a master’s degree in education and curriculum from the University of Phoenix.

“Mr. Rodriguez brings with him a wealth of experience and a fresh approach to music instruction. We are excited about the future of music performance in Canutillo under his leadership,” CISD Superintendent Dr. Pedro Galaviz said.
