The Canutillo Independent School District has named Mrs. Maria Castillo as the new Assistant Principal at Congressman Silvestre & Carolina Reyes Elementary School. Mrs. Castillo is well known to the school community, as she has 12 years of experience as a professional educator.
“I have known education would be my career of choice since I was in 4th grade,” says Maria Castillo. “I believe that as an instructional leader, I can help shape Canutillo's vision and maintain our back-to-back A status.”
Mrs. Castillo was formerly a teacher at Gonzalo and Sofia Garcia Elementary School in Canutillo ISD where she taught 3rd and 4th grade dual language classes, and most recently served as an at-risk teacher.
Castillo has been recognized as the 2017-2018, 2019-2020 and 2020-2021 Teacher of the Year and district Teacher of the Year in 2017-2018. Castillo has served as a Texas Education Agency committee review member for the STAAR assessment to ensure alignment in both English and Spanish since 2018.
Assistant Principal Castillo aims to build a rapport with teachers where they can build trust, learn together, and collaborate ideas that will highly benefit the students. She is honored to be a part of the administrative team and looks forward to collaborating with parents, teachers, staff, administration and the community to accomplish greatness.
Mrs. Castillo wants to make an impact, not only in her students, but in the staff and community at Reyes Elementary. She lives by Lisa Haisha’s quote - "Great leaders don't set out to be a leader, they set out to make a difference. It's never about the role, it's about the goal!"
Mrs. Castillo is a proud 1999 graduate of Canutillo High School. She received a BA in Interdisciplinary Studies from The University of Texas at El Paso and pursued a Masters in Curriculum and Instruction, graduating Magna Cum Laude. In 2019, she earned her Principal certification for K-12 from Region 19.
