Canutillo Independent School District Superintendent Dr. Pedro Galaviz this week announced the appointment of Maria Varela as the next principal at Bill Childress Elementary School. Her appointment is effective Monday, April 3.
Varela is an experienced educator who has spent her whole professional career in Canutillo. She previously served as assistant principal at Childress since 2019.
“Ms. Varela’s appointment is proof positive that we grow great talent in Canutillo,” Galaviz said. “I am confident that under her guidance, Childress will continue to provide its students the top-notch education they have been receiving.”
Childress Elementary received an A rating from the Texas Education Agency during the 2022-23 school year.
Varela has served as intern principal at Damian Elementary and spent time as a classroom teacher at Childress, Canutillo, Garcia and Damian elementary schools.
She has a bachelors of science degree from the University of Houston, where she graduated magna cum laude. She also has graduate degrees from the University of Texas at El Paso and University of Lamar.
