A Beautiful Mind was a popular 2001 movie about a mathematical genius. This film chronicles the life of John Nash, who won the Nobel Prize for his work. We are proud to announce that the district is receiving a grant that will assist in nurturing some Beautiful Minds of our own.
Canutillo’s math program has earned a highly competitive Math Blended Learning grant from the Texas Education Agency (TEA) that will scale Canutillo ISD’s roster of blended-learning math programs in grades pre-K through 8th, a practice that enables teachers to deliver personalized learning in order to meet the needs of all students. This grant will allow Canutillo to work towards receiving a State Designation as a Math Innovation Zone.
Blended Learning combines face-to-face instruction with online learning by leveraging technology to assist teachers in diagnosing student prior knowledge, differentiation of academic paths for each student, and adjusting lesson execution based on real-time information about student mastery.
“Canutillo ISD believes that opportunity is everything when it comes to preparing our students for college and career success,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Pedro Galaviz. “One of our core goals is to provide students a high-quality math program - one that is personalized for each one of our students.”
Math Innovation Zones is a four-year process to design, launch, scale, and sustain a high-quality blended learning model in math throughout a pre-K through 8th-grade feeder pattern. Blended Learning can be categorized into one (or a hybrid) of four models: a rotational model, flex model, a la carte model, and an enriched virtual model. In turn, students gain a sense of ownership and control over their learning that helps them succeed in the classroom setting.
This new TEA grant will provide CISD with resources, guidance, and a project manager who will focus on fully institutionalizing a high fidelity of implementation model that will expand Canutillo’s vision of increasing the number of college, career, and military readiness.
This honorable state designation supports the district’s ongoing efforts of providing equal access and opportunity to advanced math for all students. In 2019, with the support of Council on Regional Economic Expansion and Educational Development (CREEED), CISD launched a pilot program which enrolled 40 students with at-risk academic backgrounds in 8th-grade Algebra 1, a course they would not normally be able to access until high school. Over the past two years, CISD has increased middle school Algebra enrollment by more than 50%. Today, the majority of the district’s middle school population is enrolled in an advanced section of math.
Canutillo’s goal is to have 100 percent of Canutillo 8th-graders enrolled in Algebra 1 by the 2023-2024 academic school year before entering high school, positioning them for academic and college success. This expansion will make Canutillo ISD the first district in Texas, and just the 76th school district in the country, to enroll all of their 8th grade students in Algebra 1.
