Dear Canutillo Community,
I am thrilled to share with you the remarkable highlights from our recent Board of Trustees meeting held on Tuesday night. It's moments like these that truly reflect the excellence and dedication within our school district.
First and foremost, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to Angel Rodriguez and Evelyn Gesueldo-Lopez from Canutillo High School, along with Mykohl Arellano from Northwest Early College, for their outstanding achievement in being named finalists for the prestigious Gates Scholarship. This recognition is a testament to their academic prowess and unwavering commitment to community service. These students exemplify the values of our district, and I have no doubt that they will continue to make us proud as they pursue their higher education goals.
In addition to celebrating academic excellence, we also had the pleasure of honoring the remarkable achievements of our young scientists at the 2024 CISD Science Fair. Childress Elementary third-grader Emilio Ortiz, Canutillo Elementary fourth-grader Bianca Carrillo, and Damian Elementary fifth-grader Victoria Diaz emerged as Grand Champions in their respective grade levels, showcasing their ingenuity, passion and dedication to the field of science. Their accomplishments serve as a source of inspiration for us all and reinforce the importance of hands-on learning experiences in shaping the future leaders of tomorrow.
Furthermore, I am delighted to announce an exciting new partnership between the District and Goodwill Industries of El Paso. Together, we will be opening a Goodwill Store at Canutillo High School, staffed entirely by special education students. This initiative not only provides invaluable job training opportunities for our students but also underscores our commitment to fostering inclusivity and empowering every individual to reach their full potential. I am incredibly proud of this collaboration and the positive impact it will have on our students' lives.
Additionally, the Board approved a change to the current school calendar for the 2023-24 academic year. The last day of classes has been moved from May 30 to May 29 to accommodate the Canutillo High School graduation ceremony, scheduled for 10 a.m. on May 30. This adjustment ensures that our students, teachers, and staff have the opportunity to participate in this momentous occasion without disrupting instructional time or funding for the District. It's a small change with a significant impact, allowing us to come together as a community to celebrate the achievements of our graduating seniors.
As we approach the Easter weekend, I want to take this opportunity to wish each and every one of you a joyous and blessed holiday. May this time be filled with love, hope, and renewal as we reflect on the spirit of new beginnings and the promise of brighter days ahead. Please note that the District will be closed on Friday, March 29, for our Spring Holiday.
